Hundreds of people in the community have benefited from the health screening services provided by Methodist Healthcare staff. They offer free appraisal screenings for blood sugar, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and cardiovascular risk.
According to campus nurse Ruth Jones, who coordinates the annual event, the recent health fair was a success. "This event serves the campus community, as well as the public."
A first-time participant, Debra Terry of Holly Springs was appreciative. "I heard about the health fair on the radio, and I decided to come out with my sister. I will definitely return next year," said Terry.
Helpful take-home brochures and other information pamphlets were available to those who want to maintain good health, and to those who want to gain good health. Brandon Rose, a junior health management major said, "As an athlete, my health is very important. And with a history of diabetes in my family, it is more than important that I have good health, it is mandatory for me."
The Mid-South Transpalnt, Inc. also participated in the fair. John Gains, a heart transplant recipient and volunteer donor recruiter, from Nespit, Miss. gave helpful information to those who may consider donating organs. "Over 17 to 18 people die everyday waiting on transplants," said Gains. Statistics indicate that 6,330 patients were removed from the national patient waiting list for reason of death in 2001.
