Before the current economic downturn in the country, Marvell Smith, the personnel representative at Federal Express, Memphis, Tenn., in a meeting with senior managers informed them of new changes the company was making to move forward successfully.
Smith talked about the progress FedEx was making to help college students pursue a higher education while employed at the company.

FedEx provides customers and business worldwide with a broad horizon of transportation, e-commerce and business services. "College students have been a big part of our success and the company will continue to reward them for their efforts," said Larry McKee, senior manager of the Oakland operation.

According to available information, the FedEx Memphis hub since 1997 employed over 13,000 part-time college students. Over the years the company had increased benefits for college students, and statistics indicate that 18 percent of the students with the company move into higher positions after completing their education.

The benefits include tuition assistance program, monetary reward for students who maintain a 'C' average while attending school. Medical benefits are a plus also, for students that no longer live with their parents and don't have any medical coverage.

FedEx is currenlty working on developing internship programs for students majoring in subjects like mass communications and political science. Students can also look forward to traveling with the company, because half of the companies profit comes from international markets.

"We would like to have students travel and interact with those currently holding positions in our major markets like China, England and Australia," said Smith. He said FedEx wants to build the company from the inside out, and like they have done for years increase the number of students choosing to stay with the company after graduating.
