Here in Holly Springs, on Rust College campus, a group of students had volunteered in a national service program, the AmeriCorps, which engages more than 500,000 Americans each year in intensive volunteer services to meet critical need in education, public safety, health and the environment.
Under the supervision of Genevieve Conley, the Campus Link Program coordinator at Rust, the AmeriCorps members work together to plan and implement community service projects such as, Make a Difference Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Read Across America Day, National Youth Service Day, and National AmeriCorps Week.
T
hey once journeyed to Jackson State University to attend member training orientation with other AmeriCorps member schools. The guest speaker, Tina Brown, from McLain, Miss., gave an inspiring presentation about community service.
The students also had the opportunity to visit volunteer resource centers and community service organizations in Jackson.
The following day, the students participated in "Make a Difference Day" with Stewpot Community Services at a local shelter. They helped gathered and stored clothes at the facility.
