Montgomery, a six- foot- two, 175-pound point guard from Pensacola, Fla., led the Rust College bearcats to win over LaGrange and Birmingham Southern College. While enabling the team's success, Montgomery also picked up some personal accolades by earning a spot on the Division 3 Team of the Week, Dec. 15-21, 2008, by averaging 10 points and 10 and a half assists, making seven of 16 shots from the floor.
Montgomery said he is very honored to be recognized for his achievements but the team has a long way to go to achieve their ultimate goal to the NCAA tournament. "It feels great to know my hard work is paying off but I am no where near where I want to be yet." Head coach Rodney Stennis expressed his satisfaction with Montgomery. "I couldn't be prouder of William, he is a bright young man with excellent athletic ability."
Montgomery started playing basketball at an early age by watching the likes of Michael Jordan and trying to imitate Jordan's moves on his portable goal in the driveway. He hopes to one day make a living playing professional sports either in the NBA or overseas.
According to assistant coach Ato Green, "William was an unexpected blessing in disguise and we are lucky to have him. If he finishes his career here at Rust, he could really be something special through his continued hardwork and dedication."
Montgomery stated that without his teammates none of his accomplishments would be possible. "It feels good to know you have a player of a high intelligence level running the show for your team. William gets people in the right spots and takes high quality shots," said Green. The team will definitely need all of Montgomery's capabilities to finish this season strong.
