It's unusual for Rust College president, Dr. David L. Beckley, to change course in his assembly address to students, but he did so Sept. 10, during the 143rd Opening Convocation.

The president said he decided to switch from what he originally planned to present because of what he saw prior to the convocation.

He mentioned how he strolled upon a Grown and Sexy Pajama Party flier earlier on campus, and this seemed to be of great concern to him. He therefore decided to change the topic.

"We're not here to enjoy the not so finer things that Holly Springs or Rust College has to offer," he stressed.

Perhaps, if some of the students have not already seen the flier post-card advertising the sexy pajama party, he brought a copy to the convocation to let students know that events like this should not get in the way of the real reason why they have come to Rust to further their education.

"Enjoy the Pajama Party if you must, but never let the side shows get in the way of the real show," Beckley said. He emphasized further, "For 143 years this year, the real show on this campus is about educating and empowering young people once they leave these sacred grounds."

Beckley challenges students, faculty and staff to rethink and remember the reasons why they are here. He wants everyone to commit to making this a productive year no matter what their roles may be. The president urges the student body to know that they are here for a purpose, education.

He quotes the school motto, "By their fruit, ye shall know them", and said this implies that "people will know they can depend on you and trust you, and most of all they will know that you will respect yourself."

"The motto means also that the world wants to know you by your work, the commitment, and living up to what you agreed to do. That is the real show young people," Beckley concluded.
