After nearly 45 years, the great sport of tackle and touchdown may be coming back on campus.

The football program was dropped in 1964, said Dr. Ishmell Edwards, vice president and athletic director of Rust College. "It was too big of a drain on the budget." The college, however, has long range plans to rebuild the football program, he added.

The vice president hinted that the school plans to meet with alumni associates to discuss how to bring football back on campus. Edwards said the administration would love to see a football team back on board.

Most athletic programs, he said, do not pay for the disbursements of football expenses out of their budgets, and it takes six to seven million dollars to fund a football program.

According to assistant basketball coach, Ato Green, the school would need a major donor to donate money to fund a football team.

There's high anticipation among students for football comeback at Rust. "It also would bring more excitement to the campus", senior biology major Derico Alexander said. Rosa Leblanc, a junior English/Liberal Arts major, said a football team would definitely bring the school's morale up to another degree.

"It would attract more students and visitors," said Tanya Hughes, a biology major.

When I came to Rust there were still small wooden buildings. Davage Smith was much smaller and the Library and IDE center were brand new. Then Music Building was under construction (1973). (Continued…)
