Rust College celebrated the life of Mary Frances Allen Hathorne (April 13, 1923-Jan. 8, 2010), at the Homegoing service held Saturday, Jan. 16, in the Doxey Alumni Fine Arts Communication Center, Morehouse Auditorium, on the campus.

The longest serving employee at Rust, Hathorne retired from the college last year after 63 years of meritorious service to the school. Over the course of her career, Hathorne served under four presidents - Dr. Lee McCoy, Dr. Earnest Smith, Dr. William McMillan and Dr. David Beckley, the current president.

She held various positions, serving as bursar, chief accountant, assistant to business manager, and coordinator of Individual Alumni Giving.

Hathorne was also the college historian. She had deep knowledge of Rust and the people, and could recall who, what, where, and when, of information pertaining to the historically black college.

As coordinator of Individual Alumni Giving, Hathorne did her job well in persuading alumni to donate and contribute to the college and the UNCF.

She received the 34th Tower of Leadership Award, presented by Beckley, for her services to the college and the community at large.

According to Beckley, Hathorne was a mentor, advisor, and friend to thousands of young people from throughout the world.

"Her influence, advice, kindness and love will live on through generations to come, Rust has truly lost a true soldier in its efforts of providing quality educational experiences to young people throughout the world." said Beckley.

The College is establishing the Frances Allen Hathorne Endowed Scholarship Fund. Contributions can be made to the Office of Development, attention: Dr. Ishmell H. Edwards, Vice President, 150 Rust Avenue, Holly Springs, MS 38635. Phone: 662-252-8000 ext. 4014.

Mrs. Frances Allen Hathrone was always a lady. I met her in the summer of 1961, working in the business office. She always had a smile on her face whenever I went into the office. (Continued…)
