Rust College mourns the passing of Former First Lady Milverta Smith, widow of the late president of Rust, Dr. Earnest Andrew Smith (1957-67). Mrs Smith died Thursday, Jan. 21, barely two months after the death of her husband. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 26, 11a.m. @ St. Stephens United Methodist Church, Yazoo City.

Mrs. Smith, who grew up in Benton, Miss., was a 1937 graduate of Rust College, and she served as a librarian during the Smith administration. As first lady she was a role model for students with particular emphasis on work with female students. She will be remembered as a warm and friendly person who demonstrated concern for the welfare of students.

She was preceded in death by two siblings and her husband of 70 years, Dr. Smith, who passed away in early November 2009. She is survived by two sisters and three brothers.
